Adelaide Aeradio Cartoon - 1950

VZAD

This cartoon, drawn by 'GRB', depicts the life of Adelaide Aeradio in 1950. Evident from the central panel is one of the roles of Aeradio as the communication service between ATC (Area Control) and pilots - direct communication between ATC and pilots in those days was limited to the Tower and the Arrivals sectors (the innermost sector to the main airport).

'VZAD' was the radio callsign for Adelaide Aeradio, the prefix VZ being allocated to all Aeradio Stations and the last two letters indicating the identity of the individual Station. The motto, roughly translated, means "Always in the shit, but no bastards grind us down"!
